Colorado Nonpoint Source Forum to feature workshop on behavior change

Doug McKenzie-Mohr is scheduled to present a “More than brochures – real change” workshop in Denver this fall at the Colorado Nonpoint Source Forum.

The one-day workshop will be offered on Sept. 6 and again on Sept. 7 at the PPA Event Center, 2105 Decatur street in Denver. It will focus on incorporating scientific knowledge about behavior change into the design and delivery of community programs by using strong evaluation tools.

The workshop will deal with four key areas:

  • How to identify the barriers to a desired behavior, such as reducing lawn watering or pesticide use
  • How to use behavior change “tools” to design more effective  programs
  • How, and why, to pilot test a program
  • How to evaluate the impact of a program after it is implemented

The $100 workshop registration includes a Continental breakfast, lunch, breaks and McKenzie-Mohr’s book “Fostering Sustainable Behavior.” Participants must register by Aug. 6.

McKenzie-Mohr is a professor of environmental psychology at St. Thomas University in New Brunswick. He helped develop Canada’s public education efforts on climate change, served as a member of the Canadian National Round Table on the Environment and Economy, and has presented science-based community programs worldwide.
